Former federal court judge Iain Ross will lead a nation-first royal commission into the artificial intelligence boom in South Australia. He will be assisted by machine learning experts Kate Pounder and Professor Christopher Manning, who have been selected as commissioners.

South Australia's Premier Peter Malinauskas says the commission will be an evidence-based inquiry into AI's implications for the state.

"Ten years from now, you can almost guarantee that governments around the world are going to be looking back on this moment and asking themselves, did we honestly do everything within our means to ensure that AI is working for people, rather than people working for AI. And I want to get the answers to those questions right now.

" The Tasmanian and Federal Governments are investing $200 million over five years to support a power deal to help keep an aluminium smelter in the state's north open. The smelter uses about a quarter of Tasmania's power and the owner, Rio Tinto, has been negotiating a new power deal with electricity provider Hydro for some time. Russia has launched its heaviest attack on Ukrainian energy sites in months.

The strikes have caused power outages, and prompted concerns over Russia's anticipated cold weather campaign, which Ukrainian officials describe as an attempt to “weaponise winter. ” 76-year-old Vyshhorod resident Mykola Zhadan says residents are exhausted, but haven't given up hope.

"It hurts me, my heart aches for everything and for the Ukrainian people. But the Ukrainian people will endure. I am 100% certain of it. We are strong, and we are not afraid.

They are trying to frighten us with hunger and cold, but that does not frighten us. The Ukrainian people can withstand hunger and cold and endure anything knowing that tomorrow will be better. And so it will be. ” The price of medications in Iran have soared since the U-S imposed a blockade and stepped up sanctions.

Some medications have more than tripled in price, adding more financial stress for Iranians already facing rising food costs and high unemployment as the war with the US and Israel continues. Availability of medicines has also become an issue, with pharmacies in Iran's import-reliant industry reporting shortages. Australia has defeated South Africa in a rain affected third ODI, denying South Africa a clean sweep.

The final day-nighter was eventually abandoned under the lights on Wednesday due to a downpour, but Australia still celebrates a satisfying 45-run victory. South Africa, which had already sealed the series with victories in Durban and Johannesburg, ended up on 145-4 in 28 overs.
