Among them was 14-year-old Ruby from Darwin, who has spent 273 days in hospital undergoing treatment for a tumour in her femur and is now nearing the end of her chemotherapy. Know the news with the 7NEWS app:Despite being away from home for months, Ruby remained upbeat, revealing she is a huge Billie Eilish fan and sharing the excitement of meeting actress Margot Robbie during a surprise visit to the hospital.
Ruby said one of the hardest parts of being in hospital has been being away from home, particularly her beloved dog Thor and her best friend Holly. The fundraiser also shines a light on the lasting impact of children’s hospitals, with 7NEWS reporter Angela Cox sharing the story of a former patient, Darcy Sharp, and his remarkable journey from hospital ward to future doctor.
Sharp was diagnosed with cerebral palsy at birth and underwent years of treatment and rehabilitation as a child. Inspired by the medical team who cared for him, Sharp is now on the verge of completing his medical degree. Throughout the morning, Mac was also joined by 7NEWS presenter Mel McLaughlin, who reflected on the importance of supporting children and families facing serious illness.
Entertainment for the day included the appearance of a unicorn, bringing joy to the hospitalised kids and their families. Sydney Sick Kids Day is the peak fundraising day of the Sydney Sick Kids Appeal, raising vital funds for the Sydney Children’s Hospitals Network, including Sydney Children’s Hospital, Randwick and The Children’s Hospital at Westmead. The appeal helps fund life-saving treatment, research, specialist equipment and support services for the thousands of children who rely on the hospitals each year.
