Rugby Australia to include Foxtel in rights tender despite threats to walk away | zoesam93

Foxtel, alongside Australia's three commercial TV networks, digital giants such as Amazon and telecommunications giant Optus, will be asked to sign non-disclosure agreements this week, as Rugby Australia prepares to take its rights to an open tender for the first time in 25 years.Getty

However, as of Sunday night, Foxtel had not formally conveyed the message to Rugby Australia that it would walk away from the process, sources said. The fraught negotiations come with Foxtel facing financial pressures of its own as subscribers switch to cheaper online streaming services. Last year, after booking a $417 million financial loss, the pay TV provider told investors that it would cut back spending on "non-marquee" sporting content.

Optus is considered a serious contender for the rights after making an unsuccessful play for the Rugby World Cup last year. The telco has amassed 800,000 active users for its streaming service, which is centred on the English Premier League and European soccer.out-going chief executive Allen Lew said the telco was"always out there looking" at potential new sports and content rights, and was focused on seeing what the company could do beyond soccer.
