NRL executive chairman Peter V'landys is hoping Sunday's grand final beats the AFL's ratings, while South Australia reveals the commissioners for the nation's first AI royal commission and Labor HQ launches a Substack newsletter.
Rugby league executive chairman Peter V'landys is hoping Sunday's NRL grand final can deliver the code a television ratings win over the AFL grand final held last weekend.
NRL Aims for Television Ratings
Seven, which holds the rights to the AFL, wasted no time reporting the Melbourne game was the most watched program this year. The rival code has Kylie Minogue and Jai Arrow in place of the customary pre-game entertainment of years past. The grand final build-up kicked off on Wednesday night with the Dally M awards at Barangaroo. The event was pretty uneventful, we're told, at least compared to years past.

Then on Thursday came the NRL's annual lunch, which drew a smattering of rugby league and media types to the International Convention Centre in Sydney's Darling Harbour. Among those present was Ashley Klein, one of the NRL's top referees. V'landys was there, holding court, of course, along with Roosters chief executive, one of V'landys' most trusted confidants, who was recruited as his top lieutenant at the NRL this year.
Also present was Matt Stanton, chief executive of Nine Entertainment, owner of this masthead. Stanton in July joined Foxtel to deliver V'landys a $5.3 billion media rights deal, the biggest in Australian history. No doubt Stanton has his fingers crossed that the Nine network can report a 2026 record of its own come Monday morning. Kate Pounder's name first came across our desk when she was being linked with senior jobs at both OpenAI and Anthropic.
South Australia's AI Royal Commission
The former Tech Council of Australia chief executive and OpenAI adviser ultimately didn't take jobs at either. But on Thursday, Pounder's name surfaced again. This time it was as one of the commissioners of South Australia's AI royal commission. Peter Malinauskas, that state's premier, revealed plans for the nation's first AI Royal Commission in August.
Pounder wasn't the only big name revealed on Thursday. She'll be joined as a commissioner by Reserve Bank monetary policy board member Kelly Barnes, a machine learning expert at Stanford University. Announcing the plans in August, Malinauskas said AI gone bad would make social media look like a walk in the park and reportedly revealed in Adelaide that he hadn't informed Prime Minister before the announcement. What great timing.
Our guess is the newly appointed commissioners won't have to look too far back for material after it emerged this month that OpenAI's rogue agents attempted to infiltrate four Australian government websites. If ever there was a signal that we might have reached peak newsletter, the arrival of Labor HQ on Substack just might be it.
Labor HQ Joins Substack
The newsletter-cum-social media platform is already home to a string of big-name writers and journalists who have left major publications to try to snare a greater share of the value they think they can get from readers by getting paid directly. In Australia, there are a number of big names already firing off regular missives to readers, including former prime minister Tony Abbott.
But the platform is also home to plenty of guff, including but not limited to the Labor HQ account recently brought to our attention. By our count, the Labor account has roughly 220 subscribers, who have so far been reading about how Labor is Delivering Real Change over the course of intermittent monthly updates. Good things take time, we guess. Advertisement John Buckley.
