Club versus country tensions are running high in the rugby world after Premiership clubs blocked the part-time secondment of Saracens' strength and conditioning coach, to England. The move sparked debate over conflicts of interest and highlighted disagreements between clubs and the RFU.
Talking points from across the rugby world include club vs country tensions, debate over Newcastle's future and a stag do gone wrongwas “still with PRL and the RFU ” and he didn’t want to say any more.
Steve Borthwick, the England head coach who was at Saracens on Sunday, has worked with Morrow at the north London club and on the 2017 Lions tour, and was backing Saracens’ recommendation for Morrow to work with England part-time. McCall had said last week it would be “small-minded” for this to be blocked. But in the meantime seven of the 10 Premiership clubs voted it down, citing a potential conflict of interest, with those in support understood to be Sarries, Bristol and Newcastle.
Heads scratched, though, among Bath’s coaches and the broadcasters, as television match official Dean Richards intervened to rule out an early “try” by home flanker Ted Hill. In the action proper, winless Newcastle looked “deflated” from the start, according to pundit Chris Ashton, and they gave an object lesson in how not to attack against 13 men, when Leicester has two in the bin, after initially gaining a try by Callum Chick.
This left Coventry top of the table, as the only team with three wins. So, who is going to get promoted? That, in case you didn’t know by now, isCoventry are among the clubs pushing to change the stipulation for planning permission and a construction contract to be in place this season for a staged transition to a 10,001 capacity, and to address the wide funding gap between the Premiership and the Championship.
