Anna McGee celebrates the freeing from storage of thousands of previously unseen artworks, now on display at the city’s Santa Maria Novella museum

The lack of space in which to display art is, of course, a problem faced by museums internationally, and one variously mitigated by collection-digitising initiatives, lending schemes and – often the least palatable option – deaccessioning. The concept of a visitable depot is not entirely new, either.
Most of the artworks here are from the 20th century. Florence’s unexpectedly overflowing supply of modern art can be explained by an initiative led by the art critic Carlo Ragghianti in the 1960s. After the flood that devastated the city in November 1966, destroying or damaging thousands of artworks, Ragghianti launched an international call for the donation of contemporary art to Florence.
has been designed with the public’s presence in mind. The string-and-card tags might not have all the details of a museum label, and you may occasionally have to crane your neck, but this is clearly a curated selection. Such warehouse chic could almost be the latest evolution of the Pompidou Centre’s inside-out architecture.
