Barry Humphries has been remembered by some of the world’s most influential leaders, media stars and comedians as one of “the greatest ever Australians”.
Humphries, who moved to London in 1959 and appeared in West End shows such asbecame a huge star in Britain. His most famous comedy creation became a hit in the UK in the 1970s and landed him his own TV chat show, the Dame Edna Everage Experience, in the late 1980s.
Boris Johnson, who resigned as British PM last year, labelled Humphries as “one of the greatest ever Australians” and a “comic genius who used his exuberant alter egos, Dame Edna Everage and Sir Les Patterson, to say the otherwise unsayable.”
