Fox have reached a deal in a defamation lawsuit about false claims spread during the 2020 US election.

Fox Corp and Fox News have settled a defamation lawsuit by Dominion Voting Systems for US$787.5 million , averting a high-profile trial putting one of the world's top media companies in the crosshairs over its coverage of false vote-rigging claims in the 2020 US election. At issue in the lawsuit was whether Fox was liable for airing the false claims that Denver-based Dominion's ballot-counting machines were used to manipulate the 2020 US election in favour of Democrat Joe Biden over Republican then-President Donald Trump.

Fox Corp CEO Lachlan Murdoch told Wall Street analysts in February the company had about US$4 billion cash on hand. The deal spared Fox the peril of having some of its best-known figures called to the witness stand and subjected to potentially withering questioning, including executives such as Rupert Murdoch, the 92-year-old media mogul who serves as Fox Corp chairman, and Fox CEO Suzanne Scott as well as on-air hosts including Tucker Carlson, Sean Hannity, and Jeanine Pirro.

‘The left was salivating over Fox lawsuit’: Megyn Kelly breaks down Dominion settlement‘The left was salivating over Fox lawsuit’: Megyn Kelly breaks down Dominion settlementSky News Australia contributor Megyn Kelly says the left was “salivating” to see Fox News “go down” after Fox reached a settlement over defamation claims made by company Dominion Voting Systems. Fox has agreed to pay US$787 million in damages. Dominion was pursuing the argument that there was ‘actual malice’ in comments broadcast on Fox News around the 2020 election, with unsubstantiated claims made by then-President Trump over Dominion voting systems contributing to election fraud. Ms Kelly spoke to Sky News Australia host Paul Murray about the settlement. “The thing that I was relieved to see it settle over was I do not want to see the standards for defamation cases changed,” Ms Kelly said. “And the left was salivating to see Fox News go down on this and if they hadn’t they would have run around saying, ‘Oh my God, if even this speech by Fox News was protected promoting these election lies when behind the scenes we know the executives had doubts about it, then we have to change the defamation standards, we have to make it easier to sue people for defamation’. “And if you care about free speech and if you care about journalism and a free press, you don’t want to see that. “So, it was very good, I think, that the case went away – I did not like it legally as much as everybody else did. “I actually thought that Fox had a lot of grounds to argue that this wasn’t a good case.”
