Bob Moulton says he is among the rural dialysis patients who have fallen through the cracks in the state's transport subsidy scheme.
Nearly 80 per cent of rural people with chronic kidney disease experience financial hardship while accessing life-saving treatment
Mr Moulton has for the past two years had to make a nearly 140-kilometre round trip three times a week for haemodialysis. He had been admitted to hospital more than a dozen times and spent more than eight months away from home since being diagnosed with chronic kidney failure in 2020. "It is not uncommon for rural dialysis patients to live apart from their partners to reduce the financial toxicity during dialysis treatment," Dr Scholes-Robertson said.
In South Australia, the PATS subsidy was increased on January 1 from 16 cents to 32 cents per kilometre for those located more than 100km from treatment.
