Saskatchewan Rush playoff hopes are still alive after they beat Rochester 9\u002D6 on Saturday night.
The Saskatchewan Rush captain — whose day job is chief compliance officer at an asset-management firm in Toronto — might have a bit of explaining to do when he gets to work this week, given that not many co-workers would have engaged in Saturday-night fisticuffs.
The victory, before 9,012 onlookers, improves Saskatchewan’s record to 4-9 and keeps their dimming playoff hopes alive. And Corbeil is happy that he’s around to fight another day. The trade deadline was this past Tuesday, and as a pending unrestricted free agent, Corbeil expected to be dealt. But Saskatchewan general manager Derek Keenan opted not to make any moves, and Corbeil — who has played with the team since 2012 — felt a surge of relief.
A top three West Division finish would guarantee a playoff spot, and Vancouver — currently 5-7 — occupies that space right now. Saskatchewan has five games left in their regular season, including the next four at home. Saskatchewan Rush forward Marshall Powless takes in a pass during Saturday’s 9-6 win over the Rochester Knighthawks at SaskTel Centre. The Rush, who lost Thursday in Calgary, gave veteran forward Jeff Shattler a pre-planned rest on Saturday so they could get 2020 seventh-overall draft pick Marshall Powless into the lineup. Powless scored his first career goal and added an assist. Matt Beers, Jeff Cornwall and Josh Currier also scored for Saskatchewan.
