Russell Crowe opens up about the unmade Gladiator sequel that saw Maximus resurrected by the Roman gods and fighting throughout history.

Russell Crowe opens up about the totally bonkers Gladiator sequel that was never made. After Gladiator's tragic ending saw Crowe's character succumb to his wounds and die, an unmade sequel written by Nick Cave saw Maximus resurrected by the Roman gods and fighting throughout different periods of history.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT During a recent appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast hosted by Josh Horowitz, Crowe lamented the insane Gladiator 2 script they never got to make. The Australian actor explained the setup for the unmade sequel, explaining how Maximus is "stuck between worlds." However, Crowe was very busy at the time and the sequel simply never came together.

It's so odd because at the time when we discussed it, everybody else that we were involved with that wanted to do a straight ahead thing, but the other side of that was this other idea that I had. He's killed too many people to go to heaven right, but he's too good a man to be cast into hell. So you meet Maximis and you realize that he's in limbo.

The Unmade Gladiator Sequel Plot Explained The unproduced Gladiator screenplay Crowe is referring to floated around during the mid-2000s. The insane script opened with Maximus awakening in Elysium, a Roman afterlife populated with souls too corrupt to ascend to the heavens, which Crowe alludes to. After fighting his way out of the hellish afterlife by killing Hephaestus, Maximus returns to Rome to discover the new Emperor Lucius has become just as amoral and power-hungry as his uncle Commodus.
