Russia says its forces stopped firing near two besieged Ukrainian cities on Saturday to allow safe passage for civilians, but city officials say Moscow was not fully observing the partial ceasefire.

"We wanted to join NATO and the EU and this is the price we are paying, and NATO cannot protect us," she said. Russian forces have made their biggest advances in the south, where they captured their first sizeable Ukrainian city, Kherson, this week. Russia said it had destroyed 82 Ukrainian aircraft, 708 armoured vehicles, 74 multiple rocket launchers and 56 drones.
