NATO has accused Beijing of conspiring with Moscow to subvert the international rules-based order, as part of a new 10-year blueprint that, and brands Russia the most significant and direct threat to security, peace and stability in Europe.
NATO’s classification of China’s “stated ambitions and coercive policies” as a challenge to “our interests, security and values” came against the backdrop of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which China both supports and has indirectly facilitated. “We’re proving that NATO is more needed now than it ever has been, and it’s as important as it has ever been.”The new 10-year NATO doctrine replaces its 12-year-old Strategic Concept that described Russia as a “strategic partner” and did not mention China.“The PRC employs a broad range of political, economic and military tools to increase its global footprint and project power, while remaining opaque about its strategy, intentions and military build-up,” it says.
“It uses its economic leverage to create strategic dependencies and enhance its influence. It strives to subvert the rules-based international order,“The PRC is rapidly expanding its nuclear arsenal and is developing increasingly sophisticated delivery systems, without increasing transparency or engaging in good faith in arms control or risk reduction,” it says.NATO insists it remains open “to constructive engagement” China, but this would require “reciprocal transparency”.
