Russia is massing armoured vehicles outside Kyiv amid war crime claims that illegal weapons are being used in to inflict mass casualties.
Russian forces have intensified attacks on Ukraine as they battle to overcome strong resistance, with a column of armoured vehicles outside Kyiv now more than 60 kilometres long.
Mr Zelensky announced Ukraine had applied to immediately join the European Union in a bid to further rally the continent’s support for his country. “They used the vacuum bomb today,” Ms Markarova said. “The devastation that Russia is trying to inflict on Ukraine is large.”Human rights groups also accused Russia of using cluster bombs, which spread smaller warheads over a greater area. Both kinds of weapons are illegal under international law.
US satellite firm Maxar Technologies released fresh footage of the convoy of Russian tanks, trucks and other armoured vehicles massing outside Kyiv. Australian Defence Minister Peter Dutton said Russian troops had underestimated Ukrainians’ resistance and were frustrated by it, but grim days lay ahead.
