Russia has reached the stage where it could launch a military attack against Ukraine at any point, the US state department warned, reports mcranston1.

| Russian military forces are being watched by the US and its allies for any attempts they might make to fabricate a justification for an invasion of the Ukraine before mid-February a senior official said.

Ukrainian officials have warned that Russia could launch an attack from various directions, including from the territory of Belarus. “Russian military plans to begin activities several weeks before a military invasion, is something we’ve been watching closely. And our assessment has been that could happen anytime between mid-January and mid-February.”Russia has denied an intention to attack its neighbour but demanded guarantees from the West that NATO will not expand to the Ukraine or other ex-Soviet nations or place troops and weapons in those countries.

“Should Russia further invade Ukraine, we will provide additional defensive material to the Ukrainians above and beyond that, which we are already in the process of providing.”“We are now at a stage where Russia could at any point, launch an attack on Ukraine. Since this unprovoked and hostile troop movement, there has been nonstop diplomatic engagement.”

Russia will deploy a dozen Su-35 fighter jets and several air defence units to Belarus, Mr Fomin said.
