Russia's Wagner paramilitary force claimed to have taken control of a town on the outskirts of Bakhmut as the grinding battle in eastern Ukraine continues
Updated Jan. 19, 2023 2:19 pm ET, claimed that his soldiers had taken control of Klishchiivka, a town on the outskirts of the eastern Ukrainian city of Bakhmut.
Klishchiivka, to the southwest of Bakhmut, has been the site of heavy fighting in recent weeks, as Russian forces have continued, which began last summer. Capturing the town would put Moscow, which already controls territory north of Bakhmut, closer to encircling the city. Ukraine, however, still holds the high ground to the city’s west, which is easier to defend.
