Russia says Ukrainian rocket kills 63 Russian soldiers.

KYIV, Ukraine — Russia’s defense ministry says 63 of its soldiers have been killed by a Ukrainian strike on a facility in the eastern Donetsk region where military personnel was stationed.

The barrage was the latest in a series of relentless year-end attacks, including one that killed at least four civilians on New Year’s Eve. Energy infrastructure facilities were damaged as the result of the attack and an explosion occurred in one city district, the mayor said. It wasn’t immediately clear whether that was caused by drones or other munitions. A wounded 19-year-old man was hospitalized, Klitschko added, and emergency power outages were underway in the capital.

Ukraine is using sophisticated Western-supplied weapons to help shoot down Russia’s missiles and drones, as well as send artillery fire into Russian-held areas of the country. Five people were wounded in the Monday morning shelling of a Ukraine-controlled area of the southern Kherson region, its Ukrainian Gov. Yaroslav Yanushevich said on Telegram.

Seven drones were shot down over the southern Mykolaiv region, according to Gov. Vitali Kim, and three more were shot down in the southeastern Dnipropetrovsk region, Gov. Valentyn Reznichenko said.

Putin uses New Year address for wartime rallying cry to RussiansPutin uses New Year address for wartime rallying cry to Russians(Reuters) -Russian President Vladimir Putin devoted his annual New Year's address on Saturday to rallying the Russian people behind his troops fighting in Ukraine and pledging victory over Ukrainian 'neo-Nazis' and a West supposedly intent on 'destroying Russia'. In a stern and combative recorded video message, broadcast on national television, Putin cast the war - which he calls a 'special military operation' - as a near-existential fight for the future of Russia. Its soldiers, he said, were fighting for 'our motherland, truth and justice ... so that Russia's security can be guaranteed'.
