The reaction to the UK’s sanctions on three Russian oligarchs and five banks has been lukewarm at best.

Russia’s former president and prime minister and now Deputy Chair of the Security Council of the Russian Federation, Dimtry Medvedev, has responded in a tweet, versions of which he published in Russian and English. The figure threatened by Medvedev would mean the cost of gas would more than double. Dutch gas, the Euro benchmark, is currently priced at around €823 per cubic metre.The Russian city of St Petersburg is set to host the Champions League football final in May.

St Petersberg’s Krestovsky Stadium, known as Gazprom Arena under a sponsorship deal, was used as a venue during the 2020 Euro finals. The UK will also sanction members of the Russian lower house, the State Duma, and the Federation Council, the upper house, who voted in favour of recognising the independence of Donetsk and Luhansk.
