Drones are shaking up the nature of battlefield injuries by limiting rapid rescues of wounded soldiers, leading to a surge in amputations.
An Australian medical company is teaching cutting-edge trauma surgery to Ukrainian doctors as they grapple with the reality of a war dominated by deadly unmanned drones, which have fundamentally altered the battlefield.
Drones limit timely movement of injured people as they scour battlefields hunting for troops, leading to complications from tourniquet use.Tourniquets are used to cut off blood flow from ruptured arteries in people’s arms and legs, which can occur when they are hit by bullets or shrapnel. The pressure ensures the injured person does not die of blood loss, but prolonged use can make it difficult to save the limb.
Ukrainian soldiers and civilians alike are being treated in public hospitals, the first in Europe in almost 80 years to face large-scale polytrauma.Mariana Svirchuk, executive director of the First Medical Union of Lviv, which runs the largest hospital system providing care to war injured, said the three-hospital system had been forced to adapt fast and so too had the staff who were unprepared for the injuries they were being forced to treat.
Ms Svirchuk said ultimately “people need people” and in addition to the need for funds and medical aid, a critical element of capacity building in Ukraine has been the people-to-people links forged during the crisis. “We need friends. People need people, yes? To support us. For doctors, it is important to have a second opinion and to find friends somewhere to share the cases, talk about the patients and develop the quality of health.”Aspen Medical rose to prominence when it was deployed to help treat Ebola patients in West Africa in the mid-2010s, and again when it was selected to operate field hospitals in Northern Iraq during the ISIS insurgency.
