Ukrainian officials accused Russia of holding hundreds of thousands of people hostage in the city of Mariupol as Putin’s forces attacked escape routes. Follow updates here.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba accused Russia on Wednesday of holding 400,000 residents of the besieged city of Mariupol hostage by shelling the southern Ukrainian port city despite efforts to establish a safe evacuation corridor for civilians.

Russia has denied targeting civilians during its invasion of Ukraine, which it claims is a “special operation”. A deep trench some 25 meters long has been opened in one of the city’s old cemeteries in the heart of the city. Social workers brought 30 bodies wrapped in carpets or bags Wednesday, and 40 were brought Tuesday.

The Switzerland-based company’s decision follows similar moves by other food majors, which are under pressure from consumers to take a stand against the conflict.Gamble and Unilever said this week they were ending new capital investment in Russia and no longer advertising in the country. Unilever has suspended all imports and exports of products into and out of the country.
