Britain and its allies vowed not to rest until Vladimir Putin is held accountable for war crimes after the discovery of hundreds of dead civilians on the outskirts of Kyiv.

“Russia’s despicable attacks against innocent civilians in Irpin and Bucha are yet more evidence that Putin [the Russian president] and his army are committing war crimes in Ukraine,” British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said. He added: “We will not rest until justice is served.” Mr Zelensky said he had created a “special mechanism” to investigate, vowing to find and punish “everyone” responsible.

Foreign Secretary Liz Truss said: “We will not allow Russia to cover up their involvement in these atrocities through cynical disinformation and will ensure that the reality of Russia’s actions are brought to light.” Emmanuel Macron, the French President, tweeted: “The images reaching us from Bucha, a liberated town near Kyiv, are unbearable.
