Democracies including Australia need to band together against the ‘community of autocracies’ of Russia, China, Iran and North Korea, one of NATO’s top officials says.

Already a subscriber?The burgeoning alliance between China, Russia, Iran and North Korea poses a serious threat to Western values and security, and requires Australia and other democracies to band together against the “community of autocracies”, a top North Atlantic Treaty Organisation official says.

The tensions such incidents bring will be among the topics discussed at Tuesday’s The Australian Financial Review Asia Summit in Melbourne.From a European perspective, Mr Appathurai warned Russia was also increasingly engaging in sabotage and cyberattacks against NATO members, in addition to waging its war on Ukraine.

Mr Appathurai said Russia had been implicated in a recent spate of arson attacks, vandalism attacks on politicians, derailment of trains and ransomware cyberattacks that were actually a cover for planting malware on networks. “China is spreading Russian disinformation about NATO and Ukraine,” he said. “China is exercising with Russia near our territory. It is exercising with Belarus right on our border. The Chinese military exercising right on our border with countries that are adversarial to us, that is a real concern.”
