Satellite images released by US-based Maxar Technologies show a build-up of two dozen Tu-95 and Tu-160 long-range bombers at Engels-2 air base in Saratov Oblast.
It comes as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky warned the country was facing the threat of further missile attacks after a strike on electricity infrastructure last week subjected Ukrainians to the most acute power cuts since Russia's invasion.
Ukrainian forces have continued their counteroffensive into the eastern and southern stretches of the warzone in attempt to drive Russia back before the winter freeze. Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff General Mark Milley said last week the “very very cold” winter would naturally halt tactical operations, adding that the frontlines on both sides were “beginning to stabilise”.
