UConn coach Dan Hurley expecting big things from Rutgers transfer

Rutgers' Cam Spencer during the second half of an NCAA college basketball game against the Minnesota Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2023, in Piscataway, N.J. Rutgers won 90-55.

Castle, the Big East Preseason Freshman of the Year and a projected NBA lottery pick, will play alongside Spencer and returning point guard Tristen Newton as the Huskies look to become the first team since Billy Donovan’s Florida Gators to win back-to-back national titles . “He’s a competitor, he was a player, he grew up in a competitive environment with his family, same as me,” Spencer told NJ Advance Media, referring to Bob Hurley Sr., the former St. Anthony’s High School coach and Naismith Hall of Famer, and Bobby Hurley, the two-time national champion point guard from Duke who now coaches Arizona State. “And the intensity that he brings is what I try to bring as a player, so I’ll run through a wall for him.

But his Rutgers experience is in the rear-view mirror and now he’s focused on trying win games for UConn, ranked No. 6 in the AP preseason poll.
