A scintillating first half gave way to a brutal street fight as South Africa beat the hosts by one point to book a semi-final showdown with England.

South Africa crushed France’s hopes of a maiden World Cup title after withstanding a Paris storm to win by a point after a ferocious and breathtaking quarter-final.

France captain Antoine Dupont returned from cheekbone surgery, but the mercurial halfback ran out of steam and ideas. Les Bleus scored through tries by Cyril Baille and Peato Mauvaka, with Thomas Ramos adding 13 points from the tee. It was a swashbuckling start by France, with Mauvaka intercepting the ball in the midfield and making a beeline towards the posts, only to be brought down10 metres from the line.

With barely time to breathe, South Africa regained control when Kolbe outpaced Damian Penaud with astonishing ease to collect Jesse Kriel’s kick and score.
