New independent MP Monique Ryan has paid tribute to her predecessor and ex-treasurer Josh Frydenberg but took a swipe at the former government’s record on climate change.

Dr Ryan used her maiden speech to Parliament to pay tribute to her predecessors, Liberal stalwarts such as Sir Robert Menzies and Andrew Peacock labelling them as “true liberals”.

“Those men were all true liberals; they recognised that open markets are the best way to boost prosperity, they were committed to protecting individuals’ rights, even before federation Alfred Deakin spoke in Hawthorn about the virtues of equality of opportunity,” Dr Ryan said. “My predecessor Josh Frydenberg, a well-respected member of this place, spoke in his first speech of the honourable legacy of previous members of Kooyong.Dr Ryan was one of a slate of Climate 200-backed independents who toppled sitting Liberal MPs including the then-treasurer who was seen as a future leader of the party.
