Farmers in South Australia's Southeast are facing a 'green drought', with historically low rainfall hindering feed growth for livestock. This unprecedented situation has led to the region receiving its first-ever delivery of free livestock feed from Need For Feed Australia, marking a reversal for farmers like Brian Munro who usually contribute hay to the charity.
Farmers in SA's South East have received feed from a charity hay run for the first time. While the state's South East is usually known for its reliable rainfall and good farming land, producers say they are struggling to grow enough feed for their livestock.
"People I know from in town were bewildered as to Mount Gambier having a green drought," Mr Munro said. But the increased demand this year has meant increased prices for hay from across the state and over the border. He said dry conditions had also impacted other parts of south-eastern Australia previously thought "drought proof", including south-western Victoria and northern Tasmania. But the amount of demand meant a few farmers — including Mr Munro — missed out.
