South Australia will likely further ease its coronavirus restrictions between Christmas and New Year's Eve, but the emergence of the Omicron strain means the state may not be as free as previously proposed.

South Australia is set to reach a 90 per cent vaccination rate for people 12 and over by the end of the yearAfter a meeting of the state's COVID Transition Committee this morning, Police Commissioner Grant Stevens said he would be in a position to announce the next phase of the state's COVID-Ready Plan by Friday.

The state government had contemplated the next stage of opening would take place once 90 per cent of the population aged 12 and over was fully vaccinated.would see quarantine requirements lifted altogether for fully-vaccinated domestic and international arrivals.LIVE UPDATES: Read our blog for the latest news on the COVID-19 pandemic

High-risk activities including dancing at nightclubs, and standing and drinking, would be reserved for fully-vaccinated people. But Mr Stevens suggested there may be some movement in those plans, with quarantine requirements for international arrivals, and venue limits still under consideration."There will be different variations for different types of activities, but we're trying to make it as simple as possible and provide as much latitude as possible for businesses to operate and take advantage of the relaxation.

"I think there will be an incentive for people to get vaccinated if they want to fully participate in all the activities we normally enjoy.""The very strong advice from the Chief Public Health Officer is not to mandate vaccinations beyond the very few sectors that have already been included in a mandate," Commissioner Stevens said.Watch
