Peter Malinauskas tells the WA and Victorian premiers that the national interest should govern where to put the waste, not “domestic political tit-for-tat”.

| South Australian Premier Peter Malinauskas has hit back at his Victorian and WA counterparts’ call for his state to hostMr Malinauskas did not rule out SA hosting it. But as he visited Britain to size up the job of building a nuclear submarine shipyard from scratch in his state, he said the waste should go “where it is in the nation’s interest to put it”.

Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews also called on South Australia to host the facility, saying it was the state benefiting the most from the AUKUS deal. While not ruling out a waste facility in SA, he said the decision “demands a mature, considered approach from all concerned, including politicians in roles such as mine”.“It should be free of domestic political concerns from respective states. The test that should be applied to where the nuclear waste is stored in Australia should be: where’s the safest place to store in the nation’s interests?,” he said.
