San Antonio FC upsets Austin FC for first win against MLS opponent
San Antonio FC defeats MLS club Austin FC in OT 2-1 in a third-round match of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup on Wednesday, April 20,2022 at Toyota Field. After San Antonio FC withstood the final moments of Austin FC’s late barrage, defender Mitchell Taintor took a deep breath, let out a yell and gazed around at the celebrations of the sellout crowd at Toyota Field.
The stakes of the match created an energetic atmosphere from the crowd of 7,922 at Toyota Field. Two full sections of Austin FC supporters engaged in coordinated chants and dances through the match, while fans in Austin’s signature green dotted a sea of SAFC black around the rest of the stadium. San Antonio FC hosting a first-division team was a reminder of the city’s long and public courtship of an MLS expansion franchise — hopes that were mostly dashed when Austin was awarded a club, playing its first match last year.
Manley provided the decisive goal for San Antonio in the 96th minute, pushing a leaping header into the lower-right corner of the net from about 8 yards. Justin Dhillon shielded the ball from a defender near the right edge of the penalty area, then turned to fire a crossing pass toward the 6-yard box, where Elliot Collier created a deflection that snuck just inside the far post.
