The council of the Northern School for Autism has pushed for the government to fix a ‘dangerous’ shared space. |adamlcarey
It fears the arrangement breaches Victoria’s child safe standards. The government is modernising the school but has no plan to move the groups on.A school for autistic children is demanding action to improve child safety after an intellectually disabled girl fled on Tuesday, exiting through a shared gate that is left open during school hours for members of the public to attend two community groups on the site.
The gate is used by members of the Lalor Men’s Shed and the Whittlesea University of the Third Age , which hold classes and workshops during the day. “It’s been going on for a while and it’s just not on; how long do we have to wait before something happens?” said parent Lyndell Farha, who is also a school council member.visited this week, accompanied by three school parents, we entered via the pedestrian gate, walked past the Men’s Shed and up a flight of stairs that took us into a school building used by students, without encountering a staff member.
Lalor Men’s Shed president Alan Carbis agreed that the school layout was a problem, but he said the organisations had no other site they could access. He said the potential for students and Men’s Shed members to cross paths had grown since the school expanded last year, opening six new portable buildings adjacent to the shed.“The pedestrian gate is open so that U3A and the Men’s Shed can access the buildings that they are in,” he said.
