Salwan Momika, an Iraqi man who sparked global controversy by staging Koran-burning protests in Sweden, has been killed in a shooting. Swedish authorities confirmed his death, and his trial for incitement to racial hatred has been postponed. Prime Minister Kristersson has raised concerns about potential foreign involvement in the murder.

Salwan Momika , an Iraqi man who ignited international controversy by staging Koran-burning protests in Sweden in 2023, has been fatally shot, according to Swedish authorities. A spokesperson for Sweden 's prosecutor's office confirmed Momika's death in the capital city of Stockholm on Wednesday. Momika was scheduled to receive his verdict on Thursday in a trial where he faced charges of incitement to racial hatred .

Goran Lundahl, a lawyer for Stockholm's District Court, stated that the sentencing has now been postponed indefinitely. Momika had defended his actions, claiming he believed the Koran 'should be banned in the world because of the danger it causes to democracy, ethics, human values, human rights, and women's rights. It just doesn't work in this time and age.'Swedish authorities initially attempted to prevent Momika from staging the protests by denying him a police permit. However, this decision was subsequently overturned by Stockholm's Court of Appeals, which upheld his right to freedom of speech. An account on X, formerly known as Twitter, believed to belong to Momika, regularly updated his followers, exceeding 230,000, on his trial proceedings throughout the year. The account also frequently disseminated anti-Islam viewpoints. Just earlier this month, the account was soliciting donations to support a lawyer who was purportedly assisting Momika in seeking asylum in the United States.A prosecutor will now lead the investigation into Momika's murder, while Stockholm's police spokesperson confirmed that security services will also be involved. Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson expressed concerns on Thursday, according to public broadcaster SVT, that Momika's assassination could be linked to foreign entities, prompting heightened security measures.
