Sam Groth has resigned from the Liberal Party frontbench, a further sign of turmoil in the Victorian Liberal Party following John Pesutto’s devastating defamation lawsuit loss.

Sam Groth says he will stand down from the opposition frontbench in a further development of the deepening of the crisis around the leadership of John Pesutto.

In a statement on Friday, Groth said he would step down from his role as opposition spokesman for tourism, sport and events and opposition spokesman for youth because Pesutto had not stood down following his loss in court on Thursday.“It is with regret that, following yesterday’s Federal Court judgment against John Pesutto and his subsequent decision to remain as Liberal leader, I have decided to resign from his frontbench. In good conscience, I can no longer continue to serve in this role.

“My loyalty remains with the members of the Liberal Party, the people of my electorate of Nepean, and all Victorians. I will continue to represent them and work alongside my colleagues to develop the vision and policies we will take to the election in November 2026.is a Victorian state political reporter for The Age.
