Australian soccer star Sam Kerr, facing charges of racially aggravated harassment, gave emotional testimony in court, claiming she felt 'terrified' during an incident involving a taxi driver and police officers.

Sam Kerr , the captain of the Australia n women's national football team, took the stand in her trial, claiming she felt 'terrified' during an alleged incident in January 2023. Kerr, a world-renowned footballer playing for Chelsea in the Women's Super League, is facing charges of racially aggravated harassment against police constable Stephen Lovell. The incident reportedly occurred following a night out drinking where Kerr and her partner, West Ham midfielder Kristie Mewis, called for a taxi.

The taxi driver alleged that they refused to pay for cleanup costs after one of them became sick and that one of them smashed the rear window. Kerr arrived at Twickenham Police Station with Mewis, driven by the taxi driver. According to the prosecution, Kerr became 'abusive and insulting' towards PC Lovell, using racial slurs. Kerr admits making the comments but denies that they constitute the charge. During her testimony, Kerr described feeling sick and putting her head out of the taxi window before the driver rolled it up and started driving 'dangerously'. She stated, 'I was terrified for my life,' explaining her fear stemmed from both the dangerous driving and the possibility of being taken to an unknown location. Kerr and Mewis, she claimed, repeatedly tried to open the doors and windows but they remained locked, leading Mewis to 'kick out (the window) with her boot'. Body-worn camera footage from PC Lovell was previously presented to the jury, in which Kerr and Mewis express fear and claim they were 'trying to escape' the taxi when the damage occurred. Kerr also made reference to Sarah Everard, a woman murdered by a Metropolitan Police officer in 2021, telling officers about a 'girl in Clapham' who 'got raped and killed'. Kerr, born in Perth, Australia, also alluded to the Claremont serial killer, stating, 'I lived in a state where for 30 years there was a serial killer that was thought to have been a taxi driver. Everyone was talking about not getting in a taxi.
