“Being a walk-on is not the preferred choice,” Mathews said of his unconventional route from the third deck of Kyle Field to between the white lines of Kyle Field. “But I’ve been living the dream since the day I showed up.” “I was on the edge of my couch, watching from home,” said Karamitsos, who now lives in League City, of watching Mathews finish sixth among the Aggies in tackles against the Gators. “Sam has worked so hard and has been dedicated to the grind, and it’s definitely paid off.”
Warden said he would urge scouts that even if they didn’t believe in Mathews’ arm, they should give him a shot at receiver. “The guy is an athlete. … He can run,” Fisher said. “He’s in the top 5 percent to 10 percent on the team of guys who can run.” Mathews enrolled at Blinn College in Bryan after he left Harding one year into college, all with the idea of winding up as an A&M student, football or no.
