WE REMEMBER Samuel Sharpe who led the Christmas rebellion in Jamaica, which began on Christmas day in 1831 and continued until January 1832.
Two days later the revolution began, with tensions erupted with rebels setting fire and attacking a number of prominent estates, seizing control of Kensington Estate in Montego Bay.As news of the uprising spread an estimated 60,000 slaves, from the total slave population of 300,000 took part in the rebel assaults on plantation property taking over large rural parts of St James Parish.
Sam Sharp himself was captured and was imprisoned for months before eventually being executed. He was only 28-years old at the time of his death.
