NRL: With the chance to reach a fifth consecutive grand final and the opportunity to coach four premierships in a row, the 360 panel discuss whether Ivan Cleary will become an all-time great NRL coach.
Ivan Cleary can join the conversation for one of the greatest coaches in the game’s history if he can make a fifth straight grand final and lead Penrith to a four-peat.
James Hooper noted that the last two coaches to make five straight grand finals are now both Immortals.“Norman Provan was the last coach to do it and he was playing at the time. He was captain-coach of the famous Red V.“If Ivan makes this Grand Final, don’t forget they were beaten the first time they made the GF against Melbourne.
“Craig Bellamy has coached for 20 years at one club and Wayne Bennett for 900 games and Jack Gibson had won premierships at a couple of clubs,” Tallis explained.“I think they thought Wayne had a superstar side, but once Wayne left his legacy got bigger.” “I know they have coached a lot more games and I know that consistently they have had their teams in the finals on a lot more occasions.
“I think part of the reason he didn’t get a lot of wraps is because he can be a little bit aloof and he can come across as a little bit tricky to interpret where he is going at times.
