The San Antonio-New Braunfels metro area is among the U.S. cities with the highest percentage of residents who are obese or overweight, according to aThe region was ranked No. 9 out of the 100 most populous metro areas, the personal finance website said. WalletHub, which is known for financial information and services, analyzed each metro area's obesity rates, health consequences, physical inactivity, and other weight-related factors to come up with its ranking.
The CDC says obesity can cause heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, and certain types of cancer, all of which are some of the leading causes of preventable deaths. Medical costs for those who are obese were $1,429 higher than for those at a healthy weight, according to the CDC.In the WalletHub report, the McAllen-Edinburg-Mission metro area in the Rio Grande Valley topped the list as the most obese U.S. city. It was the only region in Texas to be ranked ahead of San Antonio.
