It’s a summer of STEM for local teachers participating in a program focused on lessons and hands-on activities.
About 20 educators are participating in this year’s Scobee Teachers Academy, located at San Antonio College.
“Throughout the week, the teachers have been studying the eclipse and preparing activities to bring back to their schools and students,” Rick Varner, center director at the Scobee Education Center said. The goal of the academy is to provide resources and experiences that inspire teachers to make STEM education even more engaging for their students.
“The Boeing Company has sponsored the academy, so each of the teachers will get two of these sun spotters. The sun spotters allow groups of students to stand around and study the sun safely,” Varner said. “Most of the teachers here are STEM specialists, which means they work with their entire school, so for every teacher we are talking to we are expecting to have an impact on two or three hundred children.
Northside ISD teacher Dior Edison is one of the participants and excited to share what she’s learned to her students.Copyright 2023 by KSAT - All rights reserved.
