Hernandez / For the San Antonio Express News“It is with heavy hearts that we mourn the passing of friend, brother, local artist and co-curator of our “American Dream” mural, Jesse Treviño,” wrote the Cortez family of Mi Tierra Cafe & Bakery on its Facebook page.
In November, Treviño had surgery to remove a cancerous tumor from his jaw. It was the second time that Treviño had been diagnosed with cancer. He was diagnosed with stage four throat cancer about 10 years ago. It was treated with chemotherapy and radiation and went into remission. Treviño is known for such public art pieces as “The Spirit of Healing,” a 93-foot-tall mural he completed in 1997 on the side of Santa Rosa Children’s Hospital, since renamed the Children’s Hospital of San Antonio; and “La Veladora,” a three-dimensional, 40-foot-tall mural depicting a votive candle bearing the image of the Virgin of Guadalupe that is on the side of the Guadalupe Theater.
An Army veteran who had to relearn how to paint after losing his right arm because of injuries he sustained while serving in Vietnam, Treviño first gained acclaim for his realistic paintings of everyday scenes on the city’s West Side.
