Bravo’s parents, Katherine Bravo and Armando Gutierrez Bravo, showed up to support their son, among about a dozen others.
His mother said the investigation was kept in the dark and was a public shaming of her son. She questioned how the city, as a large employer, resolves its issues.
As speaker after speaker put their support behind Bravo, the embattled councilman sat up straight, showing little emotion.Sandoval was not present at Thursday’s meeting, but she released a statement — one of her few public comments on the incident in months. Bravo’s outburst took place Sept. 15 before City Council voted on the annual budget. He approached Sandoval before the meeting about her refusal to support his proposal to spend excess revenue on weatherization and climate change mitigation programs.
Many officials, led by Bravo, wanted to spend the funds on programs that would counteract the effects of climate change. Bravo had support, but he failed to gain enough votes. Instead, the money went toward aSandoval had proposed a similar climate fund — a permanent one — that ultimately passed along with the city’s annual budget.
