Third-grade teacher Diana Lopez was surprised with a school assembly in her honor and an award that comes with a $25,000 prize.

The shock was obvious as she brought her hands to her face. Teachers and students around her clapped, cheered and jumped. She is one of two Texas recipients of the award this year. Fourth-grade teacher Jenna Dean, of Helena Park Elementary School in Nederland, was named earlier this week. “Being able to actually collaborate is something that the school affords me that not every other school does,” Lopez said. “Having educators around me who love what they do and are also so passionate, that’s such an encouragement to me in what I do in my classroom.
