Rance RistauWith every San Antonio FC goal Saturday, colorful smoke will billow out from the supporters section, drifting over Pride-themed corner flags and spectators holding rainbow fans.
“I think it’s super special,” SAFC forward Justin Dhillon said. “It’s a great way for us to show that we care and want to support any way we can. So really excited to be a part of that, and hopefully it carries through the whole organization.” “Two of our core values are integrity and caring,” San Antonio FC senior marketing coordinator Celina Leyva said. “This is just one of the many ways we can show our community that we care about San Antonio. Yes, we’re a sports organization, but we want to focus more on the community and how we can help.”
Thrive Youth Center’s mission is providing LGBTQ homeless young adults with a safe and supportive environment, and Kennedy said the organization’s wait list grew “more than ever” after Texas Gov. Greg Abbott and Attorney General Ken Paxton took steps this year toward labeling gender-affirming care for young people as child abuse.
Pride initiatives have come under the microscope in the USL Championship in recent years after two publicized cases of players using homophobic slurs during matches. “We have these internal conversations, and those are over the course of the season, year after year,” SAFC coach Alen Marcina said. “It’s something that we do believe in, having these conversations and people having voices.”
