San Antonio FC smothers El Paso Locomotive FC in shutout win
El Paso Locomotive FC plays San Antonio FC during a USL Championship soccer match, Saturday, April 16, 2022, at Toyota Field in San Antonio, Texas. Preparing to face an El Paso Locomotive team that entered Saturday ranked second in the league with 13 goals, coach Alen Marcina instructed San Antonio FC to be “aggressors from start to finish.”
While El Paso thrives on ball control, SAFC favors a more aggressive approach, forgoing short, easy passes to attempt long connections with players on downfield runs. “We knew if we came out fast, we could put a lot of chances on them,” forward Elliot Collier said. “We were very unfortunate to not be 3-0 up at halftime, but we shut out one of the best attacking teams in the league, so I can’t be more proud of the guys.”
“Facing up the center back, that’s one of my favorite things to do,” Collier said. “I just gave him a little shake, cut inside, put it on frame, and it went in. What more can you say?” The Locomotive created a moment of danger in the 67th minute, when a free kick from the wing led to a scramble in front of the net, but Farr connected with a leaping punch to push the ball to safety.
The team’s second-leading scorer with eight goals last year despite being limited to 14 matches, Patino had a chance for a clinching strike in the 90th minute, dribbling in one-on-one against the keeper on a counterattack. But his second touch on the ball was a bit too forceful, allowing El Paso’s Evan Newton to charge forward and smother the shooting angle.
