He donated it to the Witte Museum.It occurred to me that 2023 marks the 100th anniversary of the opening of seven of the city’s “junior schools” as they were called in 1923. I know that a social studies teacher, Charles Hanus, now deceased, compiled a great deal of material regarding the history of the San Antonio Independent School District.
Both business and academic leaders advocated for making the junior high years more challenging, more like high school. In 1922, from July through August, San Antonio school Superintendent Jeremiah Rhodes toured junior highs in Northeastern cities, said the San Antonio Light, Sept. 3, 1922, “to get a clear idea of the mistakes in junior high school building construction that San Antonio should avoid.” Rhodes, who spent some time observing summer school in a Washington, D.C.

Junior high promoted “self-expression” with classes and activities in the arts.The school board’s architects — Phelps & Dewees, a young, local firm founded in 1919 — started submitting plans early in 1923 for modern, fireproof, two-story buildings, and construction contracts were put out to bid in March 1923.
