A high-frequency neonatal ventilator helped Ricardo Carrion Jr.'s son breathe - the technology was developed and tested at Texas Biomedical Research Institute, where he leads COVID-19 studies in the battle against the coronavirus. His son, born 24 weeks premature, was in a neonatal intensive care unit for six weeks. As a boy, Ricardo Carrion Jr. spent hours dabbling in science research, doing experiments and catching tadpoles at his South Side home.
For the past 18 years, the San Antonio native has worked on the world’s most dangerous diseases as a scientist at the institute’s biosafety level 4 laboratory, one of four in the nation. In October 2009, Carrion’s son was born 24 weeks premature. The baby weighed 1 pound, 15 ounces and was 13 inches long. Doctors at Christus Santa Rosa Children’s Hospital of San Antonio gave the tiny infant a 50 percent chance of survival.
During presentations, he credits his son’s survival to medical advances resulting from animal research. The neonatal ventilator model was developed in part through preclinical animal research done at Texas Biomed several decades ago. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration requires animal testing for most drugs, vaccines, medical devices and surgical techniques before they are deemed safe and effective enough to be used and tested on humans.
San Antonio native Dr. Ricardo Carreon Jr. is head of the Texas Biomedical Research Institute’s high-containment labs and COVID-19 studies Jan. 31. He is a graduate of Central Catholic High School and the University of the Incarnate Word.Carrion’s work on viruses began with research for his Ph.D. program at the institute. During the 9/11 terrorist attacks, he helped with critical research into the mailings of the infectious disease anthrax for the Justice Department.
