The San Antonio Symphony is back for independent performances — but the musicians remain on strike.

Mary Ellen Goree hasn’t played alongside her San Antonio Symphony colleagues since September and it’s because the symphony musicians have been on strike.

“Well, it’s been very difficult and, like many of my colleagues, I have also gone and performed with other orchestras out of town. Just last week I have played with Richmond Symphony in Virginia,” Goree, principal second violin of the symphony says. “But I think everybody would agree there’s no place like home.”

Hufty turned and welcomed the musicians as they stood before their first night of a two-night performance began. The crowd roared and Goree definitely felt the love from her city as she wiped away some tears.
