Weather closures don’t make much of a day off for teachers. School districts are taking...

San Antonio ISD buses form “2020” in honor of the district’s graduates at its transportation base on Roland Road on June 10, 2020. Two days of bad weather have kept the buses parked and schools closed this week. For the second straight day, most San Antonio students and teachers were at home, safe and off the roads.

“We were already in a pinch of ‘every day is essential.’ And we are moving as fast as we can to get through all the content. So now I have to make certain choices about, do I skip those days we were at home and hope we can come back and review it or do I move everything a little faster?” Ackerman worries about something else. It might be risky to drive or uncomfortable to walk, but some families rely on school for their kids’ meals and might not be able to stay home from work to care for them.

She sees families in Somerset ISD relying on neighbors for child care on unexpected days off. Teachers, though, get a chance to “reset” and spend extra time with their own children.
