Animal rescue technician Joy Ollinger deployed to Maui as part of the ASPCA’s national disaster response team

Just weeks after catastrophic wildfires devastated much of Maui, one San Diego resident jumped on a plane headed toward the disaster to help the island’s animals — to become theirThat’s what many Hawaiian pet owners call themselves — a word with many meanings, among them guardian, protector, caretaker.

ASPCA disaster manager Joy Ollinger takes care of a horse on Maui after many animals’ owners were evacuated due to wildfires. She assisted with search and rescue as well as animal handling, traveling across the island to feed and care for pigs, horses, cats and tortoises whose owners were hospitalized, had evacuated or had lost their homes.

“Collaborating with local agencies is essential in assisting affected communities in the aftermath of disasters, and the ASPCA has seen firsthand the direct impact that mobilizing our team of specially trained disaster response personnel like Joy has on people and their pets recovering from emergency situations,” said Susan Anderson, director of disaster response at the ASPCA.

Though San Diegans are more accustomed to wildfires, Ollinger says the Maui blazes still serve as a reminder that it’s critical to mobilize at a moment’s notice when disaster strikes.of California pet owners found that although most live in a community that faces natural disasters, one in four people have no disaster preparedness plan in place for their pets.
