Data shows Blacks, Asian Pacific Islanders and women make up 5 percent of union trade apprenticeships

Three advocacy organizations held a press conference outside the San Diego County Building and Construction Trades Council Monday to call for more construction trades apprenticeships for Blacks, Asian Americans, Pacific Islanders and women.

The building and trades council consists of 22 affiliated construction and trade unions representing more than 30,000 workers in San Diego County.LISC San Diego, a development support organization, obtained state records showing that 3 percent of the council’s union trade apprenticeships in San Diego County went to Black people from 2007 and 2017, when they made up more than 6 percent of the county’s population.

Statewide last year, Blacks accounted for 7 percent, Asian American and Pacific Islanders accounted for 3 percent, and women accounted for 7 percent of the 93,000 people enrolled in apprenticeships — but that total includes union and non-union programs across a variety of occupations, according to the California Division of Apprenticeship Standards.

Carol Kim, business manager, said the building and trades council has worked with various community organizations to ensure underrepresented communities are getting better representation in their apprenticeships. Kim added that the council is committed to training and recruiting people who want to enter the construction industry and welcomes them to learn more about their apprenticeship programs.
